Reed & Quill Pen

A bamboo skewer or large bird feather, sliced and slit — the original pen.

Best for
Iron-gall ink, walnut ink, calligraphy
Cost
$0

Steps

  1. 01

Cut the tip at a long shallow angle (about 45°).

  2. 02

Make a tiny slit straight up the centerline of the nib, ~5 mm long — this is the ink reservoir.

  3. 03

Trim the nib square across the very tip for a flat edge.

  4. 04

Dip into ink and write — the slit holds a tiny bead of ink that flows down as you draw.
