Pomegranate Rind Tannin

Used for centuries in Persian and Indian manuscripts.

Color
Yellow-tan; black with iron
Yield
≈ 200 ml
Shelf life
2 weeks refrigerated

Boil pomegranate rinds in water to extract a rich tannic golden ink.

  • Like oak galls, the rinds are full of tannin.
  • Add iron-vinegar to shift it from gold to deep grey-black.
  • Naturally lightfast — used in old Persian manuscripts.

Steps

  1. 01

    Simmer rinds 1 hour; strain.

  2. 02

    Reduce liquid until concentrated.

  3. 03

Use as warm yellow on its own, or add iron-vinegar for a permanent black.

Hazards identified
  • Acidic / corrosive etchant
Quick checklist
  • Wear goggles, apron, and acid-resistant gloves
  • Always pour acid into water, not the reverse
  • Neutralize and dispose per local hazardous-waste rules
  • Work in a ventilated area; keep food and drink out of the studio
  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Very high tannin content — pairs perfectly with iron mordants.
