Avocado Pit Pink

The pit you usually throw away makes a startling pink paint.

Color
Soft dusty pink to coral
Binder
Gum arabic + honey

Simmer avocado pits until the water turns rosy, reduce, and bind with gum arabic.

  • The pit holds tannins that turn pink in water — totally hidden until you cook them.
  • A pinch of baking soda pushes the color from peachy to a brighter rose.
  • Free pigment from kitchen scraps.

Steps

  1. 01

Chop or smash the pits — more surface area, more color.

  2. 02

Simmer in water 1–2 hours until the liquid is rosy red.

  3. 03

Strain, then reduce on low heat to a thick syrup.

  4. 04

Stir in a pinch of baking soda to push the pink brighter.

  5. 05

Mix with gum arabic and honey, pour into a pan, let dry.

One of the easiest foraged colors — and free. Keeps best as a dried cake.
