Berry Gouache

Crushed berries thickened with chalk for opaque color.

Color
Magenta, purple, blue depending on berry
Binder
Gum arabic + chalk

Mash berries, strain, and stir into a sticky base of gum arabic and chalk.

  • Chalk makes the paint opaque (it covers what's underneath).
  • Gum arabic holds it all together when dry.
  • Color will shift and fade over time — these are mood paints, not archives.

Steps

  1. 01

Crush berries through a sieve; reduce juice on low heat to a syrup.

  2. 02

Stir in salt and vinegar to preserve.

  3. 03

Mix syrup with gum arabic until dissolved.

  4. 04

Stir in powdered chalk a little at a time until creamy and opaque.

Materials
4
  • 1/2 cup berries (blackberry, blueberry, elderberry, pokeberry)

  • 1 tbsp powdered chalk (calcium carbonate)
  • Pinch of salt + drop of vinegar

Safety

High Risk

Involves caustics, acids, or open flame. Full PPE and trained supervision recommended.

Hazards identified
  • Acidic / corrosive etchant
  • Airborne dust — respiratory irritant
Quick checklist
  • Wear goggles, apron, and acid-resistant gloves
  • Always pour acid into water, not the reverse
  • Neutralize and dispose per local hazardous-waste rules
  • Wear an N95 / FFP2 mask when handling dry powders
  • Mix in a tray to contain dust; wipe surfaces wet
  • Work in a ventilated area; keep food and drink out of the studio
  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Fugitive — stunning in journals, not for archival work.
