Dandelion Yellow

Backyard weeds, simmered into a gentle yellow paint.

Color
Soft buttery yellow
Binder
Gum arabic + honey

Simmer the yellow petals, reduce to a syrup, and bind into a soft yellow paint.

  • Free, plentiful, weeds-as-pigment.
  • Adding alum helps lock the color so it lasts longer on the page.
  • Marigolds and goldenrod work the same way.

Steps

  1. 01

Simmer petals 20–30 minutes until the water is golden.

  2. 02

Strain and reduce to a syrup.

  3. 03

Stir in alum if using, then gum arabic and honey.

  4. 04

    Pan up and dry.

Materials
4
  • A big handful of fresh dandelion flowers (yellow petals only)
  • Water just to cover
  • Pinch of alum (optional — locks in the color)
  • 1 tsp gum arabic + drop of honey

  • Wear gloves and an apron — stains are permanent
  • Use dedicated pots, never cookware

  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Picks up brighter color from yellow goldenrod or marigolds if dandelions aren't in bloom.
