Hide Glue Distemper

Theatre scenery and historic interior walls — gentle, breathable, peelable.

Color
Any pigment — flat, chalky
Binder
Hide glue or gelatin

Stir pigment into warm water and rabbit-skin glue. Brush onto walls or scenery.

  • Cheap, soft, totally matte — looks like a chalk drawing on a giant scale.
  • Wipes off with water; not for kitchens or bathrooms.
  • Traditional paint for theater backdrops and old plaster ceilings.

Steps

  1. 01

Bloom gelatin in cold water 5 minutes, then warm gently to dissolve.

  2. 02

Soak chalk in warm water until creamy; this is your base.

  3. 03

Stir pigment paste into the chalk base.

  4. 04

Mix in the warm gelatin/glue solution as binder.

  5. 05

Use warm — it gels as it cools.
