Lampblack Watercolor
Candle soot, ground with sap and honey.
Color
Deep neutral black
Binder
Gum arabic + honey
Mix soot with gum arabic and a little water for a deep matte black watercolor.
- ▸Pure carbon black, the same stuff as pencil lead.
- ▸Won't fade — carbon is one of the most permanent colors there is.
- ▸Used for sumi-e, calligraphy, and ink wash painting.
Steps
- 01
Mull lampblack on a tile with a drop of water — it resists wetting at first.
- 02
Add gum arabic solution slowly while grinding until smooth.
- 03
Add a drop of honey for flexibility and to prevent cracking.
- 04
Spoon into a pan to dry, or use immediately as wet paint.
