Lampblack Watercolor

Candle soot, ground with sap and honey.

Color
Deep neutral black
Binder
Gum arabic + honey

Mix soot with gum arabic and a little water for a deep matte black watercolor.

  • Pure carbon black, the same stuff as pencil lead.
  • Won't fade — carbon is one of the most permanent colors there is.
  • Used for sumi-e, calligraphy, and ink wash painting.

Steps

  1. 01

Mull lampblack on a tile with a drop of water — it resists wetting at first.

  2. 02

Add gum arabic solution slowly while grinding until smooth.

  3. 03

Add a drop of honey for flexibility and to prevent cracking.

  4. 04

Spoon into a pan to dry, or use immediately as wet paint.
