Old-Fashioned Milk Paint

The classic American farmhouse paint — simple, breathable, biodegradable.

Color
Any pigment — chalky, matte
Binder
Skim milk + lime

Mix milk, lime, and pigment. Brush onto wood and let it cure.

  • Lime turns the milk into a tough, breathable coating.
  • Looks chalky and ages beautifully — never plastic-looking.
  • Comes off easily if you don't seal it, so it's good for restorable furniture.

Steps

  1. 01

Mix lime and milk into a smooth slurry — it will fizz slightly.

  2. 02

Stir in pigment until you have the color you want.

  3. 03

Add a little water if too thick.

  4. 04

Brush onto raw wood within 8 hours — it spoils overnight.

Materials
4
  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 cup hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide)
  • Dry pigment (earth pigments work best)
  • Optional: 1 tsp linseed oil for sheen

Safety

High Risk

Involves caustics, acids, or open flame. Full PPE and trained supervision recommended.

Hazards identified
  • Caustic alkali — burns skin, eyes, lungs
  • Spontaneous combustion risk on rags
  • Airborne dust — respiratory irritant
Quick checklist
  • Wear chemical splash goggles and nitrile gloves
  • Add alkali to water, never water to alkali
  • Keep vinegar nearby to neutralize spills
  • Lay oil-soaked rags flat to dry, then submerge in water
  • Never crumple oily rags into a bin
  • Wear an N95 / FFP2 mask when handling dry powders
  • Mix in a tray to contain dust; wipe surfaces wet
  • Work in a ventilated area; keep food and drink out of the studio
  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Soaks into wood like a stain. Will not adhere to glossy surfaces.
