Red Cabbage Mood Paint

A working pH-indicator paint — purple, pink with vinegar, blue with soda.

Color
Purple, pink, or blue depending on pH
Binder
Gum arabic + honey

Boil red cabbage, reduce, and split into jars — each jar shifts color with vinegar or soda.

  • Red cabbage is a natural pH indicator: purple, pink with acid, blue with base.
  • You get three paints from one pot.
  • Beautiful but fugitive — it's a paint that performs chemistry.

Steps

  1. 01

Simmer chopped cabbage in just enough water to cover, 30 minutes.

  2. 02

Strain off the deep purple liquid; reduce to a syrup.

  3. 03

Split into 2–3 jars; leave one purple, add a drop of vinegar to one (pink), a pinch of soda to one (blue).

  4. 04

Stir gum arabic and honey into each.

Materials
4
  • 1/2 head red cabbage, chopped
  • Water
  • 1 tsp gum arabic + drop of honey
  • Optional: vinegar (pink) or baking soda (blue/green)

Safety

High Risk

Involves caustics, acids, or open flame. Full PPE and trained supervision recommended.

Hazards identified
  • Acidic / corrosive etchant
  • Airborne dust — respiratory irritant
Quick checklist
  • Wear goggles, apron, and acid-resistant gloves
  • Always pour acid into water, not the reverse
  • Neutralize and dispose per local hazardous-waste rules
  • Wear an N95 / FFP2 mask when handling dry powders
  • Mix in a tray to contain dust; wipe surfaces wet
  • Work in a ventilated area; keep food and drink out of the studio
  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Fugitive — these will fade. Best for journals and demonstrations, not framed work.
