Spice Cabinet Paints

Three paints, ten minutes, from your spice rack.

Color
Turmeric yellow, paprika red, coffee brown
Binder
Gum arabic + honey

Stir kitchen spices like turmeric, paprika, or saffron into a binder.

  • Turmeric = sunny yellow. Paprika = warm red. Saffron = golden.
  • Some spices are oily, some chalky — adjust binder thickness to match.
  • Smells amazing, fades quickly.

Steps

  1. 01

Steep spice in 2 tbsp hot water 10 minutes; strain.

  2. 02

Reduce on low heat to concentrate.

  3. 03

Stir in gum arabic and honey.

  4. 04

Pour into pan to dry — re-wet like normal watercolors.

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Turmeric shifts to red on alkaline paper. Paprika is surprisingly lightfast.
