DIY Gelatin Printing Plate

Unflavored gelatin and glycerin make a slab that prints like the $30 commercial 'Gelli' plate.

A wobbly slab of gelatin and glycerin acts as a one-of-a-kind printing pad — roll ink on top, lay things on it, then press paper.

  • The squishy surface picks up textures and shapes you place on it (leaves, lace, stencils).
  • Each pull is a unique monoprint — no two are exactly the same.
  • Lasts months in the fridge; just re-melt and re-pour when it gets dented.

Steps

  1. 01

Bloom gelatin in cold water for 5 minutes.

  2. 02

Add boiling water, stir until fully dissolved.

  3. 03

    Stir in glycerin.

  4. 04

Pour into a level tray to ~1.5 cm depth. Pop bubbles with a kitchen torch or a quick blast of rubbing alcohol.

  5. 05

Refrigerate 4 hours until set. Pop out by flexing the tray.

  6. 06

Roll ink on top, lay objects (leaves, lace, stencils) on, lay paper over and rub.

Notes

Lasts 6+ months in the fridge if covered. Re-melt and re-pour any time it dents. The most rewarding $5 in printmaking.
