Steps
- 01
Cut cardboard to size and seal both sides with diluted PVA (1:1 with water) to prevent warping.
- 02
Let dry flat under a book overnight.
- 03
Apply 3 thin coats of gesso, sanding lightly between coats with fine sandpaper.
- 04
Alternate brush direction each coat (horizontal, vertical, horizontal) for a smooth tooth.

- — PVA glue or matte medium
- — DIY gesso (see notes) OR cheap craft acrylic gesso
- — Wide brush or foam brush

Notes
DIY gesso: 1 part PVA + 1 part chalk powder + 1 part water + a squirt of white acrylic. Lasts indefinitely in a sealed jar.
