Gessoed Cardboard Panel

A scrap of corrugated cardboard, sealed and gessoed, becomes a real painting panel.

Steps

  1. 01

    Cut cardboard to size and seal both sides with diluted PVA (1:1 with water) to prevent warping.

  2. 02

    Let dry flat under a book overnight.

  3. 03

    Apply 3 thin coats of gesso, sanding lightly between coats with fine sandpaper.

  4. 04

    Alternate brush direction each coat (horizontal, vertical, horizontal) for a smooth tooth.

  • A flat piece of corrugated cardboard (cereal box, shipping box)
  • PVA glue or matte medium
  • DIY gesso (see notes) OR cheap craft acrylic gesso
  • Wide brush or foam brush

Notes

DIY gesso: 1 part PVA + 1 part chalk powder + 1 part water + a squirt of white acrylic. Lasts indefinitely in a sealed jar.
