Masonite (Hardboard) Painting Panel

A sheet of smooth hardboard from the home-improvement store is the cheapest pro-grade panel.

Steps

  1. 01

    Cut to size; sand the edges and lightly scuff the smooth side for tooth.

  2. 02

    Wipe clean with a damp cloth, let dry.

  3. 03

    Brush PVA + water (1:1) on both sides to seal — this prevents warping.

  4. 04

    Apply 3 coats of gesso to the painting side, sanding between.

  5. 05

    Optional: brace the back with strips of wood glued cross-grain for large panels.

  • 1/8" or 1/4" smooth-faced hardboard (Masonite)
  • Saw or have the store cut to size
  • Sandpaper
  • Gesso and a wide brush

1/4" masonite is rigid up to about 16x20". For larger work, brace the back.
