Sized Raw Cotton Canvas

Hardware-store cotton duck (drop cloth) becomes painter's canvas with a coat of size.

Steps

  1. 01

    Stretch the canvas tight on the frame and staple — start at the center of each side, working outward.

  2. 02

    Mix size: 1 part PVA to 4 parts warm water (or follow rabbit-skin glue instructions).

  3. 03

    Brush size on evenly, working it into the weave. Let dry 24 hours.

  4. 04

    Apply 2–3 thin coats of gesso, sanding between coats.
