Newsprint Recycled Paper

Old newspapers give a beautiful dove-grey sheet.

Texture
Cool grey, soft
Yield
≈ 6 sheets A5 per cup

Blend old newspaper with water, add a pinch of baking soda to neutralize the acid, then form sheets.

  • Plain newsprint is acidic — it yellows fast. Baking soda fixes that.
  • Color comes out a soft cool grey from the printing ink.
  • Cheap, fast, perfect for practice.

Steps

  1. 01

Tear newsprint into small strips, cover with hot water + baking soda, soak 2+ hours.

  2. 02

    Blend to smooth pulp.

  3. 03

    Pull and couch as usual.

  4. 04

Press and dry slowly between felts under weight for the flattest sheet.

Hazards identified
  • High heat / open flame
Quick checklist
  • Keep a Class B fire extinguisher within reach
  • Use heat-resistant gloves and a stable, non-flammable surface
  • Never leave heated materials unattended
  • Work in a ventilated area; keep food and drink out of the studio
  • Read each material's safety data sheet (SDS) before starting
  • Have water, soap, and a first-aid kit accessible

Heuristic guidance derived from listed materials. Always consult each material's safety data sheet (SDS) and a qualified instructor before attempting.

Notes

Baking soda neutralises some acid in the paper — sheets stay whiter longer.
